Leading the Movement
for
Black Wealth and
Economic Equity.

In 2015, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston released its “Color of Wealth in Boston” report, revealing a stunning racial wealth gap: the median net worth of Black Bostonians was just $8 compared to $247,500 for white residents.

During a major citywide building boom, this finding pushed nearly 1,000 Black residents to gather at the Prince Hall auditorium in Dorchester to discuss solutions. From these meetings, local business leaders launched the Black Economic Council of Massachusetts (BECMA) to drive action and create long-term strategies to rebuild and grow Black wealth across the city.

How We Work

BECMA’s team oversees the organization’s daily operations, advancing its mission through public policy advocacy at the State House and local government, hosting events that bring key stakeholders together, and connecting members to contracts, resources, and technical assistance.

The organization is guided by a volunteer Board of up to 15 voting directors, responsible for shaping BECMA’s strategic direction and providing oversight to the executive director. The Board meets quarterly to review organizational performance, fiscal health, policy priorities, and growth opportunities, while also offering financial and operational support to ensure BECMA stays aligned with its mission.

Career Opportunities

We are a small nonprofit with a big mission, and we’re always looking for dedicated individuals to join our team. We work diligently every day to achieve one purpose: to advance the economic well-being of Black people all across Massachusetts. At BECMA, you’ll develop critical professional skills and interact with business and civic leaders who are shaping the future of the Commonwealth.
